**Visual stress assessment, private tuition and study skills** Have you ever been made to feel stupid or lazy but you're trying really hard? You're not alone. Most people find learning difficult from time to time and when this happens, we can sometimes find ourselves being given labels that don't fit. Whether you have simply reached the end of your self-developed learning and study strategies, you are learning in a language that is not your first language or you have a neurodiverse brain, learning difference or visual stress (Irlen syndrome), the barriers to learning that you experience can be distressing, exhausting and humiliating. But with some simple interventions I can help you overcome your barriers and unlock a world of learning.
What is visual stress?Visual stress (VS), sometimes referred to as Irlen syndrome, is a visual processing disorder that affects how your brain interprets what your eyes see. This can cause visual disturbances such as text distortion when reading, resulting in reading difficulties and unpleasant symptoms (e.g. headache, eye strain). In addition VS can impact how you interpret your surroundings, leading to sensory overwhelm and depth perception issues (e.g. ability to negotiate stairs and escalators or play sports). It is estimated that a shocking 15-20% of the population experience VS and that 5% have severe debilitating effects. Significantly, VS can result in educational delay in children and difficulty carrying out work-related tasks in adults. VS can be alleviated simply by the use of coloured overlays when reading, and more effectively by wearing precision-tinted glasses to block the offensive light wavelengths that cause unpleasant symptoms, educational delay and work-related stress.
